GEM representatives recently met with the Fonds de Solidarité contre les Événements Catastrophiques (FSEC) in Morocco to discuss advancing seismic hazard and risk assessment in the country. Led by Helen Crowley (Secretary General), Marco Pagani (Head of Seismic Hazards), and Vitor Silva (Head of Risk Engineering), the GEM team engaged with FSEC scientists and engineers to explore collaboration opportunities.
The meeting focused on integrating GEM’s hazard and risk model for Morocco with FSEC’s ongoing initiatives. FSEC has been actively working on developing local hazard models, conducting microzonation studies, and creating a comprehensive national exposure model to better understand the seismic risks specific to Morocco. GEM’s open, science-based tools and data were presented as valuable resources to support these efforts.
One of the key discussion points was how GEM’s global seismic risk assessment expertise can complement FSEC’s localised data and analysis. The meeting highlighted the importance of integrating international models with country-specific insights to create a robust seismic risk framework. This collaborative approach aims to support FSEC’s mission of improving disaster resilience and risk management in Morocco.
Helen emphasised the value of such engagements, stating:
“Collaborating with public institutions like FSEC is essential for developing tailored seismic hazard and risk models that reflect local realities. We are committed to supporting Morocco’s efforts in building safer, more resilient communities.”
Strengthening partnerships between global and local institutions is crucial for advancing seismic safety, and GEM remains committed to facilitating knowledge exchange and capacity building. The meeting in Morocco reflects GEM’s dedication to supporting public institutions worldwide in enhancing risk assessment capabilities and implementing data-driven resilience strategies.
